Make a Will in 2019
3rd January 2019
You may not always stick to all your New Year Resolutions but make writing a Will your New Year Resolution for 2019.
It is easy to make a will and by having a valid Will you will make your instructions regarding your estate known to your family and friends and ensure the people and organisations that you care about will benefit.
Reasons why you need a will
Making a will is especially important if you have children or other family who depend on you financially, or if you want to leave something to a friend or organisation (for example a charity or your church or place of worship).
If you die without a Will you may find that relatives who you don’t know or feel close to, or the State, are the beneficiaries of your estate as everything will be shared out in a standard way defined by the law – which isn’t always the way you might want. This is especially important if your relationship is not formalised by marriage or civil partnership as your assets may not be inherited automatically by your partner.
A Will makes it much easier for your family or friends to sort everything out when you die as you will appoint an Executor who will ensure your instructions are carried out – without a will the process can be more time consuming and stressful.
A Will may help reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax that may be payable on the value of the property and money you leave behind.
If one of our solicitors helps you to write your Will we will store the original free of charge which makes it easy for your relatives to find it when it is needed. If you ask your bank or Building Society to do this for you there is usually an annual charge to pay for document storage. A copy of your Will be supplied to you on completion which you can keep with your other important documents at home.
Don’t forget that Solicitors are regulated so if the Will is lost or damaged you have recourse to make things right.
